Ughhhh... Why do people act like their little secrets are SooOOoOoOo valuable. So annoying. Buy rare items from vendors for early gold gain (plenty of lists online showing ALL the opportunities to buy from these vendors, many players create level 1 alts and camp by the vendors and check them periodically). Buy first aid books and resell them marked up for early gold game. Run a low level character to the arena and farm STV chest for vendorable gold early game on a 12 hour timer. Convert thick leather into vendorable items on a secondary account for gold while playing as a mage and selling food/ports at the same time. Grinding in westfall? Try killing Dust Devils and getting https://classic.wowhead.com/item=2091/magic-dust ! Has about a 33% drop chance from level 18-19 mobs and will sell for about 2g a piece! Running through STV or Gnomer? Mechanical mobs can drop a white item https://classic.wowhead.com/item=7191/fused-wiring that will sell for 1.5-3g on a fresh server. Are you a tailor? Can you make the Shadoweave set? Every leveling warlocks will buy it, they all have tons of gold from 38-46 because they dont need a mount, build some sets and control the auction house. Go out of your way to PM these warlocks and offer them the set. Most will gladly part with their excess gold. Just grinding mobs? Typically welps are easy to grind (low stats) and arent attached to quests - they also drop some of the rarest pets ingame. You just hit 60, devilsaur gear is BiS for a TON of classes, I wonder if that will be valuable? Invest in arcane crystals before guilds begin to build thunderfury. Take skinning while leveling. Build a bunch of level 35 characters and sell their profession cooldowns while they sit AFK in a major city. Etc, etc, etc, etc...
Its phase 1. The only raids available have fire damage. What do you think https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=17574/greater-fire-protection-potion and https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=7257/fire-protection-potion will be worth? Probably a lot right? Items like https://classic.wowhead.com/item=4402/small-flame-sac that are required to craft these drop from mobs as low as level 24-35. https://classic.wowhead.com/item=6359/firefin-snapper#comments are from fishing. https://classic.wowhead.com/item=7068/elemental-fire from mobs as low as 24-39. You wont need to have the pattern to make gold during this time period. You wont even need to be 60. You wont even need to go out of your way. Just be aware of what is valuable, and optimize your time. You were going to kill an additional 25-50 mobs to grind out a level? Kill mobs that could offer a bit more gold. These items aren't insanely valuable on their own, but given the right phase they are worth more gold than the alternative.
When will the bloodvine set be added into the game? ZG patch? Okay, during this phase EVERY DPS caster will be building bloodvine sets. Hmmm... Bloodvine requires powerful mojo, ironweb silk, mooncloth and bloodvine! So guess what? The value of these items will SPIKE massively for about 2-6 weeks on your server. How do you make gold??? A level 52-55 player can farm ironweb spiders to gain gold. A player using multiple level 35 characters for cooldowns can hoard his mooncloth for a few months before the phase or start to buy cheap mooncloth leading up to the patch and flip it. Dont have gold? Try stealth farming bloodvine nodes as a herbalist once you acquire a https://classic.wowhead.com/item=19727/blood-scythe ... Cant do any of that? Try farming Felcloth and purchasing tailoring cooldowns so that you can sell your mooncloth. The addition of this set of gear opens the doors for a TON of gold making opportunities depending on your specific situation.
Gosh AQ is about to launch, I wonder if nature resist potions like https://classic.wowhead.com/item=13496/recipe-greater-nature-protection-potion and nature resist items will spike in value? (Hint: They will.)
The early building of devilsaur gear, thunderfuries, bloodvine set and AQ nature resist pots are 4 small instances that can allow you to make a ton of gold. The game is FILLED with these types of opportunities spanning across all phases. Events, seasonal stuff, battleground weekends that will impact the value of grenades, free action potions, deviates, swiftness pots... So. Many. Opportunities.
I have a friend who only makes and sells https://classic.wowhead.com/item=5634/free-action-potion . This is it. This is all that he does to earn gold. He contacts premade teams and offers them special prices and then he acts as a broker (likely with people who run fishing bots, but never the less) he simply buys and resells free action potions in enormous quantities on both factions. He moves MASS quantities on BG weekends. He earns more gold doing this throughout the lifespan of a server than anyone else I have ever met. More than any individual in the devilsaur mafia... More than any enchanters who have a monopoly on the AH... More than mages who farm Diremaul... More than hunters who farm mara and sell carries for blackstone ring or solo DM and sell chest drops... More than rogues who pickpocket farm BRD... Your opportunities are endless. The smallest niche things can earn you a boatload of gold.
There is no secret to making gold. There is no trick. You have the phases. You know what order content will be releasing in. Earning gold in Classic is the equivalent to betting on sports events with access to a time machine. You are making a surefire bet. The only thing you can really do wrong is to hold onto your gold and watch it depreciate. Just read the phases. Understand what is coming up and then invest in what players will need to complete the new content. If you can stay 2 phases ahead of everyone you should find a sweet spot where you can really multiply your investments. If you are running around aimlessly grinding just optimize your grinding route to include mobs and items that you know are valuable. The ability to make gold is EVERYWHERE. Sure, experienced players will know to check certain mobs on a fresh server for specific items, or to loot certain weapon crates that may be hidden in the world, but you don't need to min/max the hell out of this... Just make good decisions and your gold will multiply quickly.
TLDR; You don't need experienced players to share their secrets with you. You have all the answers right infront of you. There are hundreds of ways to make easy gold and none of them are complicated because we are putting together a puzzle that we have solved MANY times in the past. Anyone saying they don't want to share their "secrets" with you, probably aren't aware of how many opportunities there are to make gold and they probably aren't a very valuable source of information anyhow.
Stfuppercut Because there are still money machines, which despite years of private server experience are still not really known :p
On every server I played on that was progressive, this money machine worked :D
Muhip
What you said:
I'm an economist and I'll give you tips on how to protect yourself against in-game inflation.
What you should have said:
"I'm a capitalist and I'm here to tell you how to exploit Inflation!"
Although I played vanilla only on weekends thus I really didn't have time to farm so to speak, I am aware of what can really make some serious money down the line. I made most of my gold during TBC because on my server's Auction House I noticed an item that was constantly low although it was high demand, so I would farm the thing and put it over on the AH when people started to ask over in trade. There isn't a single one time item that will make you lots of money the whole game, from day 1 to day 1000...

Duuuuude, you gave everything away! Beware the wrath of the Capitalist Party of Azeroth
Do you guys use the default AH without any addons? If not, which ones would you recommend for a fairly new player? I am interested in a simple one, nothing too much in depth. Just to see the value in my inventory after looting or gathering stuff so I know if it's worth keeping it in my inventory.

I believe an Addon called Auctioneer Lite could be for you, if it's made compatible.

Uh huh. Having a crystal ball to see into the future is a money machine.
Well this was a scary read, there is a lot of farming to do :@

Lets have a talk about this in a year, you can remind me on this :p
I can't PM you!
Lovely thread with a lot of useful information - especially from Stfuppercut; thank you very much for your contribution.
I'm trying to make some plans for how I can prepare for each of the different phases, and I was wondering if there were anyone with more experience than me who could elaborate on potential money making strategies for the War Effort?
Like, are there any materials that it makes sense to stack up on while they are cheap (maybe 1-2 phases before the War Effort) either so that you can 1) sell them for a profit during the War Effort (for other people turning them in) or 2) turn them in at the War Effort Commanders for the War Effort Supplies? (the contents of the supplies would of course have to be - on average - worth more than what you paid for the supplies. But like I said, I don't have much experience with the War Effort).
Also in preparation for Naxxramas... I would assume that Frost Protection Potions will be wildly more used and thus expensive - so Elemental Water and Dreamfoil can be expected to spike in value come Naxx, I would assume (?) Are there other tips for this phase?
