Just curious since I joined this forum not too long ago. Was this forum more popular last year or before classic release? Seems at least to me, that there is a pretty low activity here sadly. I really like the look and feel of it, reminds me more of how the official forums used to be like 15 years ago.

Currently forum activity is a bit slower, unfortunately. Hoping to see some more engagement with a TBC announcement, and we still continue to make improvements to the site and add new tools all the time!

The forum does seem very slow, but I guess it's up to us as fans of WoW to really get the word out there and make it as active as we possibly can. I may be new, but I'd gladly contribute however I can so let me know!

It seems to me that not just this forums but forums in general tend to have less and less activity. It's like forums are slowly being replaced with reddit, discord and social medias. Which is unfortunate imo because lengthy, well-thought text are more rarely posted on those platforms.

@francisbaud I wonder if the ubiquity of cell phones, and the fact that for many people their phone is their primary gateway to the internet, plays a role in the decline of forums. While the forum format is great on PC, things like Instagram, Twitter, and even Reddit to an extent are obviously more optimized for mobile.

Discord was the real hit. Forums have a very different discussion style from facebook or reddit so they weren't as big of an impact. But discord provides that discussion platform that makes it similar. Discord is great in how it is so fast for replying. The discussion can be excellent. However since it's effectively a chat room, it is not as good of a format for deeper and slower discussion which is what forums excel at. But forums are less popular for the same reasons. Sorta sad cause forums are fun.

@taladril That makes a lot of sense. I've found discords to be great for getting questions answered, or for killing time chatting, but it's hard to use them to find good info the way you can on a forum. Also, like you said, they don't lend themselves to deeper long-form discussions.

I agree with you, but alas nowadays most people prefer to clutter up discord, and only those looking for detailed information turn to forums. This is unfortunate.

I still like forums better because I can see what people said a week ago. On discord if you aren't sitting in there 24 7 its like there's no point.

This forum was shining back with the release of Classic under the name of Barrens Chat -- and has slowly bled off, shame -- but the reality of the situation!

They're trying (or were trying) to build something bigger than what it was, Barrens Chat was a niche forum and was winning on one thing -- being an awesome forum, good tech, fast and smooth... as well as a motivated userbase with the release of Classic back then, oh well!
