I occasionally play retail, mostly at the beginning and end of an expansion just to play through some of the stories.
With Legion and BfA everything was/is confusing as hell coming back to it, but I have to admit that Shadowlands looks like it might be a bit more fun.
I'm going to give it a go with a new character and see what I think, especially since it's included in the sub already that I have for Classic.
The biggest thing I'm worried about is the covenant system and all random shit systems they throw in you have to learn.
Nope.
I feel like I’ve been a lot more tolerant of the developments in retail than most classic players (I kept playing retail all the way through legion) but BFA was the final straw for me. The changes to WPVP, the complete incoherence/ relevance of the storyline, the fact that I geared my fresh max level rogue in full epics in under three hours.
Everything they’ve done since the release of BFA has disgusted me more. I hate all the allied races, there’s just.... nothing left for me there lol.
For me retail ended with with legion, that was the end of the original storyline anyway.
I just can't get into retail. It doesn't have the classic mmo feel and there's too many avenues for people to be outright toxic with no repercussions. Unfortunately the issues are at the very core and with the modern outlook for it that won't change. It's a shame really because I know the content itself is really polished. Sucks growing up.
Nope, I haven't been able to get into retail for years. Every time I try to log in and play it again, I end up lost in some city that I don't recognize full of talents I don't recognize, with a map full of locations I don't recognize. Feeling lost, I end up doing a solo MC to try to get a binding, then I log out and don't touch it for another year or two. People who play in my guild in Classic are playing on Retail, so I even have a retail guild to go to full of people I recognize if I wanted to. But even when I try to force myself, I just can't get into it. It's not for me.

Dealing with new stuff I don’t mind, because it’s really not that hard to get read in on current content if you really want to. What I can’t stand is twofold: the evolution of gameplay, and the evolution of the lore/story.
The general gameplay has been simplified, neutered, or in some cases just developed in an entirely different direction to the point that I honestly no longer consider retail and classic to even be the same game. The two are barely comparable, they are more like two totally different games that are just set in the same universe.
The fact is that retail has been slowly molded and changed over time to appeal to an entirely new demographic of gamers. There is nothing inherently wrong with this, but I am just not a part of that generation, so modern retail wow just doesn’t appeal to me at all.
Edit: I guess in my rant I forgot to include the second half of what I can’t stand which is the story in modern retail. I’ve probably said this in previous posts but the storyline started in the Warcraft series, (and thus the storyline of classic) was wrapped up and ended in Legion. All the loose ends have been wrapped up at this point (Arthas, Illidan, Sargeras and the Burning Legion, etc). The story of BFA was garbage to me because there really was no plot, it was just an introduction of a new cast of characters who will drive the plot in the coming expansions. As with the gameplay developments, there’s nothing inherently wrong with starting a new plot for the series, but as with the gameplay, it does not appeal to me at all.
I dont think so as long as Classic is a thing, I will not dive into retail.
I log on to try and get bindings on my Rogue, i have all the mats and the left binding, looking for right binding.
Been collecting all the legendarys on my rogue and got the legendary daggers and both glaives.
But anyways, when i do go on to farm the bindings, the graphics look really nice but the game play, i am not a fan of...
I did a little WoD and mist and wasnt a fan of either expansion, I totally missed cata.
But Legion really drew me in with artifact weapons and class halls, really got hyped for that expansion.
Played a good amount of it and have to say its up there for me right behind the big three.
Either way I think the shipped sailed for me to go back to retail.
Classic and the RPG elements are way too enjoyable for me that i cant go play anything else.
I am going to play SL if I have time. However, I am afraid that there is a lot of stuff in retail WoW which I need to know to play. Like covenants, garrisons, artifact upgrades, etc...
It's okay. New player experience is great, teaches the basics of combat, ranged/melee. Plus a dungeon run at the end..however they don't explain WHAT to do in a dungeon..like avoiding cones, boss interrupts and so on.
I dont think so, and if i do its because of social pressure. I have not enjoyed retail since Cata (Cata was so so even). Like others have said, they have changed the game way too much and it does not feel like an mmorpg anymore, more like a singleplayer game with facebook mini games etc.
No, I think now we've established that Blizzard will slowly re-release old expansions again (it clearly makes them a lot of money) I will play up to the end of WotLK and probably call it a day with the game. Ooorrrr start again from Classic after that, rinse and repeat.
Retail is just too far gone.

Hopefully they will do something like that, call it a long-term "season" or whatever, but I think that would be enjoyable
I might give it a go but probably just going to play classic. I enjoy that experience more and this is from a person who didn’t get a chance to vanilla when it first came out.
