It was stated in the original interview that announced layering, you're sitting here getting turbomad about something you don't even know about?
Be happy classic is happening my dude, don't get mad because blizzard won't release it in a way that will cause massive server population/faction imbalance problems.
Can we keep discussion about layering in the layering thread please? Or perhaps create a new topic laying out argument of layering effects in world pvp?
Well based on the feedback, I'll give PvP servers a go. I'm a pretty good sport when it comes to being ganked and whatnot and if people are willing to assist I can see that as turning itself into a positive experience.
As far as the layering, I don't think it's going to be as big a deal as you guys think. I think it's better than having 500 people in razor hill at least for the first phase.

Honestly, I think you're going to love it. I started on a PvE server back in Vanilla, despite the fact that I was avid PvPer (all my friends were on a PvE server so I joined them), but once I rerolled on a PvP server I could not go back. It completely changes the leveling experience and keeps you on your toes. You will definitely have to get used to being ganked, but from my experience most players are good sports about it and will not corpse camp you.
My buddies and I will be on a PvP server. We often try to avoid combat and rarely engage the opposite faction first. But the moment we are attacked, you bet yourself we'll always ambush for the rest of the day ;)
This thread should be titled "How awesome can PvP servers be?" and the answer is A Lot. Too many of the threads recently have focused on how bad things are anticipated to be. Best advice is to go in with zero expectations because that's how adventures actually happen.

Well said. I didn't mean to sound negative. I actually can't stand the overwhelming amount of negative posts across all forums. I am extremely excited for the release knowing that I will finally get to genuinely enjoy WoW again. I just never had a full on PvP realm experience and wanted to know if I needed to be a hardcore min/maxer to participate effectively.

Absolutely not, the people you come across will range from keyboard turning 10 year olds, to min/max turbonerds with twinked gear while leveling and capped out engineering. It's all great fun though :)
I strongly suggest playing on a pvp realm, because the hard school of leveling shapes better players. Look up world first kills in vanilla to wotlk: most are done on pvp realms for a reason.
There is a nice guide here on BC about avoid being ganked, and in addition to it I suggest getting an alt, because sometimes there are griefers that are just there to ruin your day. But thats very hard to do on two points at the same time ;-)
For streamers, i can understand why they don't roll on PvP servers. But as an everyday player, yes. Just yes.
Back in the day I played on a PvE server, which worked out because I was a casual that had no idea what I was doing. This time around, I'm considering rolling on a PvP server but am a little wary. I'm looking to have fun PvP encounters but don't want to get steamrolled all day long while leveling.
So my question is: How miserable can PvP servers be for a casual player? Is it probable that I could still have fun PvP encounters in my day-to-day leveling?
It can be pretty misserable if you like to keep your worldbuffs. Our guild <Banish> had our worldbuffs wiped by a rivaling Alliance guild <Fracture> on the private server called Lightbringer some months ago. This week we took out our revenge. We, some 20-or-so horde players wiping 55-60 alliance players at ZG island with sapper charges right as they were about to buff hakkar-heart. We wiped out their DMT, DMF and ZG buff in one instant huge sapper BOOM.

This is the kind of large organized world-PvP that you'll see on classic PvP-servers in a few months.

Awesome video!
I strongly suggest playing on a pvp realm, because the hard school of leveling shapes better players. Look up world first kills in vanilla to wotlk: most are done on pvp realms for a reason. This is a little disingenuous, as most world firsts for raids are done through a small handful of guilds. A small sample size means little. Besides, PvE servers had twice as many world firsts during vanilla as PvP servers. That's what we're looking for in Classic, right?
Really though, levelling on a PvP server as it releases shouldn't be too bad at the beginning while everyone else is levelling with you. They'll either not bother you and keep to their business, or they'll want to rumble while you're still roughly the same level. Great! People forget that it gets rougher to level once the server matures and people become established.
Brhule, it sounds like you're really excited to play on a PvP server. Please, enjoy it! Don't let me discourage you. But I definitely have to say, don't buy into the "PvP servers are the best and only way to play WoW" narrative. It's simply an alternative gameplay ruleset. And hey, if this topic is so heavy in favor of PvP, let me go to bat for PvE:
I founded the top PvP guild on my server back in the day. I LOVE PvP. That’s why I play on a PvE server. I prefer fair fights. PvP servers are a misnomer: It’s not player “versus” player – it’s player “against” player. You're typically not on equal footing with your opponent. One or the other will usually leverage an unfair advantage to win.
“Oh, but it’s World of Warcraft! It’s immersive to know there’s danger around when the two factions at war—“ let me stop you right there. The Horde and the Alliance are not at war during vanilla. Did people not pay attention during Warcraft 3? Do they not read quest text in WoW itself? Both Horde and Alliance quests state there is no war, and the two factions are trying to keep the peace. Pay more attention when doing Blackrock Depths or the Onyxia attunement chain.
I understand my opinions might not be popular, but PvE servers are a lot more authentic to the Warcraft universe than PvP servers are. You are free to enjoy your gameplay preference, but the immersion is a false pretense. The two factions didn't declare war on each other until the Cataclysm.
Want a challenge? Permanently flag yourself for PvP on a PvE server. Yes, you give up the first strike most of the time. And that makes it more hardcore than anything a PvP server will give you, ironically enough.
I've been pondering about this and I think that chances are big of me playing on a PvE server. I can still PvP there whenever I feel like it and -most importantly- not when someone else feels like it. That'll be a more fun approach to playing the game for me at least. There's enough competition in other parts of the game where PvP is not a factor anyway.
I once played on a RP private server that had world PvP enabled for everyone at all times sort of like the whole world being Gurubashi arena. It added so much immersion because everything felt dangerous. This is my stance on PvP servers, too, that once you exit your starter crib and begin venturing into the "real world" you really need to start watching your back. Having the choice to attack people or not and the other way around can some times create some pretty cool interactions as well.
I'm all for PvP servers.
