Patch 1.8
3rd April 2019

Select quote & multi quote
/images/updates/selectquote.gif
Select quote: You can now highlight specific bits of text from someones post and a quote button will appear near your cursor - click it and it will populate the quickreply box with the BBcode to quote that selection (and scroll you down to the quickreply box too).

/images/updates/multiquote.gif
Multi quote: Click the multiquote button (it's next to the quote button) in a post and it will be added to your 'multiquote counter' in the bottom-right of your screen. You can add as many posts as you like to the counter. When finished selecting, click 'quote' in the counter and you'll be taken to the full editor.

Race selection options
/images/updates/raceclass.gif
Added the 8 playable races to the 'faction' selection in registration/control panel - you can now specify whether you are a Dwarf, Night Elf, Troll etc. You can of course just remain as Horde or Alliance if you'd prefer.

I've also added some logic with jquery so that you can't choose impossible combinations like Alliance Shaman, Tauren Rogue etc. so that it conforms with the in-game combinations of race and class. If you already have an impossible combo you can keep it as a feat of strength - just don't change anything with those buttons or you'll lose it forever! :)

Registration improvements
/images/updates/registration.png
Made some improvements to the registration system. For example, if the user selects Undead as their race when registering, their forum skin is automatically set to Tirisfal Glades, and their avatar is set to either the Male or Female (gender is chosen randomly) Undead avatar from the old blizz forums. These settings can be changed later of course.

Upon successful registration the user is now also logged in automatically and taken to the index page so they can start browsing straight away. Before you would have to view a message screen, which asked you to log in again after registering - annoying!

Hopefully these changes will help introduce new people to the idea of customising their profile and forum skin - as they will see the default theme and avatar change according to their selections on the registration page without having to have made any changes themselves. It'll also be nice to see some variety of default avatars for new members instead of the normal 'Guest' one which is very prevalent (seeing as you can't choose an avatar on registration, most people don't bother).

Other changes

  • Added a hover tooltip when mousing over someone's avatar in viewtopic: it shows a sort of mini profile (basic realm/guild/discord/bnet/posts/likes data) at a glance

  • Added a 'back to top' link to top-right of quick reply box which snaps you back to top of the screen (so you don't have to scroll after finishing reading a topic)

  • Removed realms from underneath usernames in viewtopic due to above change

  • All guide authors can now see a link to the authors forum in user dropdown

  • BC team members can now see a link to the staff forum in user dropdown

  • Number of people displayed in viewtopic who liked a post has been increased from 10 to 20.

  • Darkened the bullet points between the likers' names to improve readability

  • I tried again to ajaxify the likes system (no page reload) but I just can't get it working properly guys, sorry!

  • Increased number of topics visible per page to 50 - this will allow topics to stay on the 'front page' for longer as the forum moves faster

  • 28 new topic icons have been added to the dropdown (each class + some more miscellaneous ones)

  • There are now 96 animated avatars to choose from in the WoW Classic gallery

  • Over 100 new static avatars have also been added to the Wow Classic gallery

  • You can now see a dropdown select in people's profiles that shows what groups they are in (BC Team, Guide Authors, Registered Users etc.) Selecting a group with this dropdown takes you to the group's page and show it's members.

  • New custom BBcodes introduced for guide writers such as mini-tabbed navigation areas, wowhead tooltip headers and target _blank links

  • Created list of gold titles available for instant use for guide writers

  • Created a copy & paste formatting template for guide writers

  • You can now PM multiple users at the same time (up to 5)

  • Combined some inline scripts in footer to increase performance

  • Disabled the useless 'inactive user reminder' extension which was sending emails to people who are actually active, lol. Think it had something to do with corrupt sessions tables.

  • Replaced wowhead 3D links in race/class comparison tool with a link to the raid/dungeon tier sets gallery here on bchat

  • Crawler preliminary descriptive text for guides and tech sections modified

  • Upgraded to PHP 7.1.22, and also the whole phpBB backend to v3.2.5. More stable/secure and supports the latest extensions. Wasn't as easy as all the past core-file modifications had to be accounted for.

  • The usual SEO and speed performance improvements

  • Bugs fixed

  • Fixed topic title tooltips so they only display when hovering over the text itself, not the empty row space beside it

  • Fixed users with default avatar having less padding above their usernames in viewtopic

  • Fixed subheader vertical misalignment on staff and author forums

  • Fixed tabbed window for guide writing not displaying properly in preview

  • Fixed levels not showing up in private messages

  • Fixed online/offline indicator not working in private messages

  • Fixed issue in viewtopic where default avatars did not link to that persons profile even though they were registered

  • Fixed lowercase letters on usernames sometimes being clipped off in view profile pages

  • Fixed subject field's weird positioning and sizing when topic icons are not available

  • Fixed broken links for deleting board cookies in UCP footer and cookies page

  • Fixed weird blue text when clicking 'Go' and 'Advanced Search' buttons in Chrome

  • Fixed incorrect Int and Spirit values for Dwarf Paladins at level 60 in race/class comparison tool

  • Fixed broken link to GIF brewery in credits page

  • Fixed Chrome/Firefox vertical mispositioning of header titles

  • Fixed Win10 Firefox vertical mispositioning of sorter dropdown button on index

  • Commendations

  • Devner awarded for his Shaman tanking guide

  • Seebus awarded for his Holy priest guide

  • centurion awarded for his (soon to be) Gold making guide

  • Team Members
The team has grown to encompass some new roles:

  • edoslawsky - Backlink Builder

  • SentientGypsy - Backlink Builder

  • Mr_Rosh - Social Media Op

  • s1atan - Forum Moderator

  • Henhouse - Forum Moderator

  • Toastea - Guides Liaison

  • It was really heartwarming to see so many of you guys write in with applications and well wishes about the site. Sorry I couldn't accommodate all of you - there will be more positions opening up in the future as we grow :)

    Stats
Just a few screengrabs of search and analytics stats for you. Basically it's all good in the hood - average of 200 clicks and 10k impressions a day through google search, and monthly active users has been increasing pretty steadily:

And that's it! Hope you enjoy the patch. As usual any bug reports can go here or in the bug report thread. Also this topic has an ID of 1234 woohoo!

As always, great work Teeb! This is my go-to forum for Classic now, light years ahead of the Blizzard provided rendition.

Just wanted to ask if RSS was still on the cards?

Patch 1.8 - does that mean feral druids are now viable? ;-)

Nice. I especially like the new (select / multi) quote options.

    Another improvement suggestion:

I think it would make more sense to place the "quote", "like" and "report" buttons at the bottom of a post instead on top - being forced to scroll back up (especially after reading longer posts) to simply leave a like (or use the other functions) is a bit annoying.

Yay for the new quoting functionality! Also really cool with the new registration improvements! Always good to onboard people more easily, and I really like the attention to detail with selecting an avatar by default!

If I may be honest, I actually don't like the hover-over tooltip . I really enjoyed seeing people's realms listed under their names. Seeing Bnet and stuff at a glance isn't something I feel I would ever need--I can go into their profile for that. I enjoyed immediately seeing what realms people were/are from and if I wanted to know exactly how many posts they had I could hover-over their level badge. Also seeing people now missing a race/faction badge but having a class one is giving me OCD triggers.

Just wanted to ask if RSS was still on the cards?

The ATOM feed seems to be working correctly:

    https://barrens.chat/app.php/feed

Seems similar to RSS (an XML output).

What is the Dwarf icon representing? Maybe it is obvious to everyone else but I’m a little lost!

Don't think there are any discord bots that are able to parse xml information.

It's one of their runes. Was hard to find something that represented them which also looked good on a small scale and was 'symbol-like'.

Both say that they do ATOM feeds as well. Maybe one of them will work for you?
