Bumping an old thread, was curious if this poll existed yet...

I'm 32 and started playing back in high school in 2005. I played left tackle and defensive end on our high school football team and would come home from practice beat to shit and just wanted to sink into my chair and relax by tanking my way through azeroth. A few years later some of my buddies almost failed out of college because they were playing too damn many hours. I bypassed this issue by never going to college in the first place

I am actually surprised to see so many younger people in the 15-25 range. I half expected most people in here to be 30+ coming back for a game they played in their late teens / early 20s.

Reading all the people in their 20-something on reddit that want to have that "OG vanilla player sheen" and saying "I was 11 years old the first time" makes you think WoW was ever a game mainly populated by kids..

... which all now have lives, girlfriends or families, are CEOs  and don't have so much time (as if being a kid doesn't impose a slew of restrictions on your time with parents + school etc)

when in reality WoW was always primarily for the "young adult" demographic.
(that's not to say there weren't outliers on both ends of the Bell curve)
Both

  • The Deadalus Project from 2005

  • Statista - Distribution by Age Groups from 2013
  • show the most populated age group to be squarely in the mid-twenties demographic.
From the survey data, the average age of the WoW player is 28.3 (SD = 8.4). 84% of players are male. 16% are female.
    Female players are significantly older (M = 32.5, SD = 10.0) than male players (M = 28.0, SD = 8.4).
On average, they spend 22.7 (SD = 14.1) hours per week playing WoW. There are no gender differences in hours played per week.

I was 11 years old as said and I had I think a level 58 mage, 52 Hunter and 48 Warrior if I remember correctly when TBC released. Despite my age and not being in any raid, I still miss the 3-4 hour long instances. Forming the group, travelling there and clearing it including "My mother says dinner is ready, can we pause for 15 minutes?". That's Vanilla for me. The community, the social aspects.

As am I, Didn't expect to see how many older people are going to be playing. Usually us young folks lead the games.
