In the past I’ve played a shaman to around level 30 and am 100% sold with the playstyle and the class fantasy. I don’t want to jump in again before Classic for fear of taking the sheen off that new experience, but I keep going backwards and forwards between Troll and Tauren.
On the one hand, I dig the culture of the Tauren, their spiritualism and nobility, and I think (correct me if I’m wrong) that those who play them are regarded as pretty chill by Horde and Alliance alike. This last point also applies to Trolls though, and I’d much prefer having a thin and lithe character than a hulking great cow-man. The Darkspear look rad and also have their own links to nature and spiritualism, but I’m not a huge fan of the Jamaican accent.
It would be interesting to hear if anyone is having a similar dilemma...

Being an alliance fanboy at heart makes me unable to speak from experience, but have you considered the option of female tauren? They are not the beefy bulls that the males are and they do not have the Jamaican voice mon'!
I found it also really hard to choose my race, but I think I'm quite set now, although I switched from NE hunter last week to Human Warlock this week :^)

I know how you feel, except with me its regarding Horde or Alliance... Pretty confident in maining a druid this time but that leaves me with only 2 races and on different factions. So the choice is between Night Elf or Tauren / Alliance or Horde
So I am setting up Pros and Cons to help me decide:
I like the looks and animation of both in original caster form, slightly prefer Tauren
I much prefer Night Elf cat, but the Tauren bear
Both starting zones are absolute dogshit and my LEAST favorite on both sides.
Ironforge is the greatest city in WoW, Stormwind is OK / equal to Thunderbluff for me, Orgrimmar is horrible.
Know my way ca. way to 60 as Horde, not yet experienced on Alliance
Have found a nice danish guild on Alliance, but I think my friends will go Horde
I had the same dilemma. One thing you might consider is, if you decide you want an alt, trolls have access to more classes than tauren. Therefore I'd pick tauren shaman (as I do).
I'm definitely running into the same issue. I am set on playing a rogue but I am still fluttering between races. Theres always something I like about one race and then something else I like about a different race.
Here are aome things I try to think about to help my decision:
1. Look: Do I like the look of the character model. If I dont like the male model, do I like the female model? Also, what does endgame armor look like on this race?
2. Animation: Is there an animation that every time I see I think, "that looks pretty dumb". (Male troll kick animation - Im looking at you)
3. Starting Zone: How much do I enjoy the starting zone? For example I love Tirisfal Glades and get pretty frustrated with Durotar.
4. How many people will be playing that race?: You've got to feel unique right? Probably doesnt matter, but sometimes it feels that way.
5. Racial Abilities: If you're trying to play optimally this could be a big factor.
These are the main ones off the top of my head, but maybe writing down your thoughts on each category for the races you want to play could shed some more light on the subject for you.
Honestly just play what you like the look of.
There is absolutely no way I'm going to look at a gnome for months on end just because it's slightly better than Human, I'll just have to play better than those min-maxers xo

We have a bank holiday coming up here in the UK, so I might use that to time to run around a private server or download a model viewer, see if that helps me decide. Of course with no release date yet I’ll probably be umming and ahhing about this for months! It probably doesn’t help that my favourite race is actually Dwarves... shh! Same, Dwarf is the master race of wow! Favoring Alliance purely because I would like to lvl up a Dwarf Priest / Paladin at some point
Playing a warrior and intending to tank I'm 99% sure I'm going to play Orc - highest overall stamina in the game (tied with Taurens who get an additional racial bonus to HP), high strength, https://www.wowhead.com/spell=142879/blood-rage helps with leveling and dps when in an offtank position, and +5 axes helps both during levelling and tanking scenarios pre- https://www.wowhead.com/item=18348/quelserrar
1% of me knows that a Troll gets https://www.wowhead.com/spell=274780/berserking and https://www.wowhead.com/spell=20555/regeneration and are technically slightly better tanks mathematically.
But I really want to play an Orc.

I may well join you on that one! But then I have to deal with the fact that Dwarves are the most popular choice for priests on the Alliance... I love my bearded brethren but I also like to feel special!
