Hey all. Just bored and wishing classic was here, lol.
My friends and I (5 total) are picking out the classes we're going to play and the group currently looks like this: warrior, hunter, priest, rogue, warlock.
I'll be playing the warrior, but there's a part of me that thinks going paladin instead would be fun. Good group utility, and I think I could still tank the 5 man dungeons on the way to 60. I don't have any interest in tanking at 60.
What do you guys think is an ideal group comp? Or is it too situational?
The only difficulty would be the tanking role as a paladin, as it requires a lot of work and planning and strategy to make it function in the more difficult 5 mans dungeons. Otherwise the group comp is perfect. Melee phys, ranged phys, ranged magic and healer + a tank. Enjoy!
I have a couple of RL mates and so far we have Priest, Warrior, Druid, Hunter which is quite nice (as the warrior can/will tank, the priest can heal, and I can be feral dps/tank).
You can make the Paladin tank work. The struggle usually is having a group comp of rando's that will work around your spec, etc. but it won't be a problem here. Just make sure the rogue and lock are careful with aggro.
All that's left to decide is what you want to do at 60: dps (warr) or heal (pally)?
I believe that we will be seeming more succesful non-warr tanks this time around. Why ? For one, the armor and ability numbers on private servers were all incorrect, making warriors more powerful than they originally were. Secondly, with people have so much more knowledge and experience now it will be much easier to actually make non-warr tanks work (heck, even shamans can tank...).
Just go with you think is the most fun to play! And if you group up with your friends most of the time then it is fine right?
Warrior, hunter, priest, rogue, warlock.

That’s like the frigging dream team right there man. I would NOT want to meet that group on a PvP server! Even a paladin instead of a warr would still be deadly.
Don’t worry about 5mans... really not a big deal. Like has been said you’re with mates and it’ll be fine.
You can tank 5 mans fine, you just need some key abilities to make it easier such as Consecration. The downsides for me would be that you have to drink a lot after pulls and the rotations are probably more fun on the Warrior tank.
I suspect that with your group composition you could be a Paladin tanking and have the Hunter offtanking with their pet and have no issues for most 5-man content.
I would be interested to see how well you do in the harder level 55+ dungeons, like UBRS and Scholomance. When I started playing, UBRS basically needed 15 people to be successful, it was only over the course of vanilla that that number decreased, and honestly I can't really remember ever running it as a 5-man until it's re-release in WoD, other than for nostalgia in intervening expansions.
Paladin is actually very good for aoe tanking especially in Stratholme and Scholo and you have some spells against undead on top of that.

Actually a really good point. People will be running a lot of strat and scholo too.
From my experience I would say Paladin is better for tanking Strat and Scholo then Warrior.

I'm not sure that this is particularly correct. I mean yeah the private servers numbers might be off, but there have been many private servers over the years and I think it's ambitious to say that warriors got the benefit of the numbers being off every time. Hell, I'm pretty sure there's no way of actually knowing.
