EDIT:

Panophobik ended up actually writing a full guide on phase 1 resistance gear and you can find it here!

Hey everyone!

So I'm keen on the idea of creating a guide for resistance gear for phase 1 of the content plan and thought it'd be a good idea to pool knowledge here.

A lot of people out there seem aware of the need for resistance gear in end-game PvE content but struggle (myself included) with:

  • How many resistance-specific items they should be acquiring depending on their class and raid role

  • What resistance gear actually exists out there and the means of obtaining it

  • The reasoning behind wearing resistance gear so that people have a better understanding of why they're getting it

  • If you have raided phase 1 vanilla content before I'd be very pleased to hear what you guys have to contribute. Don't worry about the other content outside of phase 1 yet, as I'd like to deal with this later on down the line when it becomes more relevant.

I'll try to come back later with a more thorough answer, but the basics is this, your prebis and stam gear will be a lot more useful than any resistance gear unless you are a tank and in that point they are going to want to farm the max amount of fire resist they can get.

Resistance gear if you have a full resist set can be useful for the lava packs in molten core but it's a lot more work than it's worth generally.

Yeah pretty much this. IMO, only the tanks need to worry about fire resist. Most everyone else can use Fire Resist Potions on the bosses where it's necessary like Ragnaros. But I think everyone gets some on their t1 and t2 sets. Non-tanks really don't need to concern themselves with resist gear until AQ for Huhuran and the "Dirty 15."

And even then I think the tanks only need the fire resist set for tanking Geddon and Rag, so if your raid isn't even that far into MC yet, it's not a big deal at all. But correct me on this one.

    Mages,
    Fire Resistance:
A quick list of items that you can farm up relatively fast and be ready for MC or supplement for certain fights in BWL. As a mage you have a leg up on other classes due to talent that provide a lot of resistances. This is a dual bonus because it means you will likely not have to sacrifice as much dps gear as other classes in order to meet certain raid resistance requirements which mean you get to do more damage and we all love that! You will most likely be using https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=22783/mage-armor for mana regen to begin with and https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=10225/fire-ward for damage reduction in MC and BWL. If you are running light on gear with fire resistance, you can always spec https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=29447/magic-absorption for good measure.

Cloth- A great beginner/bargain set for fire res is Wizardweave. All craftable for you tailors out there or purchaseable if you can find it early on. The downside is this set has essentially no other stats besides fire res.The next tier up is Flarecore. Same this as wizardweave but take more mats and/or will be more expensive but at least it has stamina and intellect.

Cloak- You will need a leatherworker to craft https://classic.wowhead.com/item=15138/onyxia-scale-cloak .

Amulet- Head to Kargath and pick up https://classic.wowhead.com/item=12563/warlord-goretooths-command to start your quest for https://classic.wowhead.com/item=16309/drakefire-amulet#comments

Weapon- Blacksmithing (BoE)- https://classic.wowhead.com/item=17015/dark-iron-reaver -I would not recommend this as your weapon unless you have absolutely nothing else to use.

    Wands- BoE from ZF- https://classic.wowhead.com/item=9483/flaming-incinerator#comments

Offhand: Both items located in Stratholme
    https://classic.wowhead.com/item=13524/skull-of-burning-shadows
    https://classic.wowhead.com/item=11935/magmus-stone#comments

    Trinkets:
    Engineering (BoE)- https://classic.wowhead.com/item=18638/hyper-radiant-flame-reflector
    Enchanting (BoP)- https://classic.wowhead.com/item=11811/smoking-heart-of-the-mountain

    Enchants- Leg or Head- https://classic.wowhead.com/item=11644/lesser-arcanum-of-resilience
    Cloak- https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=25081/enchant-cloak-greater-fire-resistance

    Pots and Consumables-
https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=17638/flask-of-chromatic-resistance and https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=11453/magic-resistance-potion were added in 1.13 as were https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=19900/fire-resistance-aura and https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=10538/fire-resistance-totem so we are likely to be S.O.L. on that.

*The above listed items are just the beginning and likely the easiest/fastest to get you up to par for T1 Raiding
*Be sure to check the AH regularly for a multitude of fire res BoE's
*There are other items out there of significant quality such as https://classic.wowhead.com/item=17110/seal-of-the-archmagus#comments but items like these drop off or require mats from bosses in the instances you are trying to get in to
    * All sets from Magisters up to Netherwind have fire res

I've seen a few threads and videos regarding the necessities of vanilla raiding, and many of them seem to be revolving around the requirements for certain private servers. Many of these tend to be overtuned at the behest of the top raiding guilds, so it's something to keep in mind.

Regarding the p. servers, the thing is that we don't know how exactly resistances worked so we shouldn't base that on p. server experience but some of you might still remember some of it from back in the day.

As a dps/healer, just bring these https://www.wowhead.com/item=13457/greater-fire-protection-potion and call it a day. Using FR gear lowers your dps/heals and therefore raid performance.

Also there is that one mob in UBRS that you can mind control, though we don't know if this will work on Classic.

I would honestly like it to be more demanding in regard to the FR requirement for Rag in MC in Classic then it is on p. servers. More progression, more fun ^^

I would personally try for a tank resistance guide for Phase 1, and then start working on a guide for phase 2 for all classes.
You could include in the tank resistance guide how other classes can obtain resistances, so they could get things prepared if you want.

This is almost certainly going to work in Classic as it was an intended mechanic and they are shooting for authenticity.

Kaliban's Loot List went somewhat into detail for specific fire resist items but it's hard to nail down exactly what patch this guide was written in.

    Here's that: https://www.wow-loot.com/index.ph p"> https://web.archive.org/web/20061121051403/https://www.wow-loot.com/index.php

Personally I have cleared Phase one on "Blizzlike" servers without much use for Fire Resistance gear, but we did mind control a mob in UBRS and used him to cast a pretty powerful fire shield on the raid before we tucked in on Ragnaros. Not sure how much the mobs magic will change in the more authentic experience.

Will look into that spreadsheet and try to figure out what patch it was from.

Clutch move with the mind control > cast fire shield on raid thing... kind of awesome!

From what I remember, I only focused on resistance gear specifically for Ragnaros as a Mage, and this was only when learning the fight. If people are doing their jobs and understand the mechanics of any given fight, until AQ40/Naxxramas you can get by without going too far out of your way as a ranged DPS.

I picked up some FR gear only because Ragnaros has a nasty habit of knocking people back with a fire attack, and if you aren't positioned correctly then you'll end up in lava or at least having to wade through lava to get back into position. Once the raid understands this mechanic you can position to avoid the knockback doing this, and at that point your raid healers should be able to top you off anyway.

For melee and tanks this advice might not fly, but be aware that a lot of resistance gear that people tend to go for is green 'of fire resistance' stuff with no stats, and sooner or later you need stats to progress. A tank that can't produce threat can't hold aggro from DPS when they need to go all-out, and that means fight times are increased, increasing the likelihood that the healers will go OOM, and that's a wipe regardless.

    Edit for phase 1 specifically:

Maraudon needs no resistance gear. It's a grindy instance for levels 45-55 or so, with 2 distinct entrances that culminate in the same final act.

Onyxia needs some FR for all raid members until you're geared enough to drop her fast due to Deep Breath, an ability that hits every member of the raid. It's also unknown exactly what makes Onyxia perform the Deep Breath; it's this unpredictability that makes some FR mandatory to help the healers.
Save the healer, save the raid.
