I honestly take breaks from wow sometime cause of this. I like speedrunning mostly because i want to get a good headstart for when classic comes out and because i like optimzing, but at the same time i can't do this "for to long"

Like yesterday i decided to do a new speedrun and downloaded the client for your own server, but after 30 mins (level 6) i needed to die in the cave (i did lots of farming in start zone) and then it wouldn't let me die (gm power thing) kinda demotivated me tbh cause i couldn't even find the command to turn it off (the commands i tried didn't work from the gm site list) - This kinda burned me out to do another. But i'll just play classic wow whenever i feel like it. Personally i love streaming it, makes it way more fun when people interact with you.

Anyway bassicly what i do is to play whenever i feel like it. U don't need to do speedrunning 24/7, find another game to play when u don't feel like speedrunning. I'm super excited about classic but it's not like u grinding speedruns will do much of a diffrence, since classic will be much diffrent values/u can't grind as much (others wwill steal them) etc.

So go for a new runs in a few weeks/1-2 months whenever u don't feel "burned out"

How are you guys planning to be able to stick to your 'routes' and stuff when there is 1000 people trying to login and kill all the mobs you need for your optimum route? Or is the idea that yeh it will take twice as long as your test run, but still 50% more efficient than the bulk, putting you ahead of the curve slightly? I would think the 15-30 section would be the most beneficial to get perfected, because 1-15 will be an absolute shit fight unless sharding occurs heavily.

Just my two cents - I've only done two 'runs' for this competition (and they were atrocious lol) but I did see what Northdale was like. The starting areas were super packed and I got shanghai'd a few times on mobs, long respawn timers, gathering quests etc. Of course, I can't say for sure what classic launch will be like but if sharding is indeed implemented for starter areas I think that the level of competition will be roughly equatable.

That's why I think I've seen a few guys here running hyper optimised routes on repacked servers, and others doing it on ND or LB so they get a 'feel' for what it will be like on launch (quests to avoid due to said competition, areas to grind mobs in lieu of this etc.). I reckon the smart ones will also have contingency plans to fall back on if they are experiencing a really disproportionate amount of other players.

Yeh, this is what I am interested in hearing. Running on an empty repacked server is great for setting records, but not great for realism. I am intrigued to see who has the best plan to adapt to high population starter zones and how to get ahead of the curve (other than just playing for the first 24 hours without sleep).

If I wanted to really focus hard on getting ahead of the curve by developing a plan and practicing runs then I would be optimising a 1-20 run on a server like Northdale or another fresh server launch/rollback. If you get a very successful run to 20 on launch, then after that a repack strategy would seem like a good idea to me seeing as the further you get ahead of that initial wave the less players you will encounter.

My route is still a work in progress but I have made it a point to note every quest in my route that is dependent on a single mob spawn (ex: Sarkoth, 5m respawn) or a single interactable object that has a respawn time after used (ex: The chest you open for the quest The Admiral’s Orders ~3m respawn) and list an alternative (usually grinding, which usually also has a backup plan..). When Classic launches I will gauge each of the spots from a perspective of risk/reward and consider how many people are near/apparently also waiting. Earlier on I see myself skipping more of these situations which will cause a slight drop from projected pacing based on solo environment running. Once you get ahead of the pack, which you will do faster regardless if you’ve practiced, you’ll have more opportunities to quest at higher efficiency by skipping less often from less competition. Another thing I’ve learned from private server running (with the element of many people leveling with you) is that escort quests early on are not worth waiting for. There is apparently an added wait time (not sure on specifics) after whoever doing the escort finishes it before the NPC returns to its place of origin. It’s also really helpful to know how much xp each quest gives (even if you don’t remember them, you can reference something like https://classicdb.ch while auto running) as you can research xp thresholds for bulk quest turn ins. (ex: at level 19 I grind to <= 7000 xp from 20 near CT on Bristleback Geomancer or Beasts before turning in 5 quests that yield exactly 7000 xp to reach level 20)

The earliest part of your run (~1-20) is the most important because getting ahead quickly means you can level more efficiently earlier; snowball effect.

You are right that launch experience makes you play differently than on a closed server repack, but the experience you get there is still valuable. Whenever you get out of the zerg, you can easily just follow the route uninterrupted. On the other hand for 1-15, you will be required to improvise greatly to adapt to the conditions and congestion, but thats even more of a reason to study up all the quests in detail to know your real capabilities. If you have done the run for 20 times already, you will know perfectly well which quests you should skip, how much exp will you lose and how long will it take to get back on track with your chosen alternatives. It's true that you cant really predict the launch conditions, but the most you can do is to have a perfect knowledge of the given stuff we already know (quests, routing etc). Another point is sharding which is close to being confirmed, which would just encourage the practice even more.

There’s a few things to unpack.

1. How to keep speed running fresh and fun:
After two years the excitement is in beating your own times and finding better routes.

2. Optimised vs live servers:
Live server launches are best for testing early levelling with competition. Optimised private repack is best for testing later route when you are ahead of the pack.

3. Contingency plans/routes:
I have three depending on player density and what the respawns are doing both mob and static. Don’t forget everyone is in the same boat so for live launches you just plough through the first few hours and get on out of the starter zone. There is an element of pvp in your planning :)

4. Getting ahead of the curve:
This comes down to not panicking, having smart and flexible routes, and a solid 24 hour grind to completely clear non speed runners.

Most of my route is optimised for vanilla values not pservers because for me the end goal is classic launch. It doesn’t translate well to places like K3 or Northdale but well enough to gauge the effects of other players on /played time.

My problem with this (on real servers and not unpacked), is that it's so much based on other players. Like i wanted to learn how i could optimze my route and level faster. So i looked at Kup (He did 2 hour run while i did 2 hour 36 mins) so it's WAY faster then me. I knew myself i could do it 10-15 mins faster no problem, but i was interested in how he could get it THAT much faster. So i looked into his route (this is on northdale). Bassicly he barely saw anyone else and managed to almost farm everywhere like there was no one else on the server (except vile quest - cave orc starting zone). Meanwhile while i did it i was stuck so many places cause of other players. I think this is due to him logging in when the server has 2.5k-3k people on while i play more at peak hours (6-9 k on). So if i want to start getting "really good times" i need to start waking up at 6-8 am and do a run & pray not to many people made new chars. I feel like this is kinda demotivating about these runs, atleast for me.

However i learned a lot from the guy (not trying to give him slack about his run). He actually had very intesting way of doing it since he farmed A LOT of exp from mobs rather then questing which turned out to be a lot faster.

You can turn off the god mode on the repack by typing ".god on/off". Most of the mangos GM commands can be found at https://www.reaper-x.com/2007/09/21/wow-mangos-gm-game-master-commands/ , but they didn't add the godmode thing for some reason.

The way I stay motivated is by doing all my testing on the repack. Most of my "speedrunning time" is spent on theorycrafting bits of the route. Then I can jump on the repack, and just test that segment. Can make it easier by setting up account macros that will add gear for certain level segments (e.g. 40-45). Then I just need to run stuff like .maxskill / .setskill X Y etc, train spells and setup binds. Adding pre-quests can be a bit annoying but it beats doing a run from the start each time I'd like to test a segment.

Doing it this way keeps me from getting burnt out, which happened when I used to do fresh runs over and over on a low-pop server. I'll do fresh runs occasionally just to keep up to date on everything though.

Finally did a segment past level 10 on repack. 8h 37m 50s to 20 on Troll Hunter.
Shaved almost an hour and a half off my Northdale time but it was my first run past 10 on repack so I made a lot of mistakes. I noted some adjustments and I think I can shave at least 30 minutes more next time.

E: leaderboards updated.

Finally got around to getting my ND hunter to 20 with minimum rested exp (never logged out in an inn or city).
9 hours 1m 14 seconds.
Happy with the time, but always room for improvement!
