What level would you suggest trying a class until, to make your decision on a main?

10? 20? 30?

What do you think gives a decent indication of what you will spend the next few years with?

30 is probably best, a lot of classes don't feel overly unique until then, and some not even until 40 (for 31 point talents). That's my own personal opine though.

I'd agree with Selexin, but some classes you get it earlier. Hunters, for instance, after you get your pet I felt like I had the class understood pretty well.

Instant 60 private servers. Many specs are completely invalid without level 60 and some gear. If you don't know what to expect and want the best idea of what to play with the minimal time investment, role on an instant 60 private server.

Stfuppercut is right. Although if the leveling experience itself has an bearing on your decision, that too should be factored in. If you are just rushing to 60, then 100% take his advice as it will instantly help show you the feel @ 60 with a certain class/build.

OP stated "What do you think gives a decent indication of what you will spend the next few years with?" I get the feeling he is looking at a longterm choice and thus should be more concerned with performance and play at level 60. It sounds like he plans on sticking with one toon for the long haul.

Stfuppercut That's what I said in my post I guess. Some people may take a very long time to hit 60 though, so knowing the leveling dynamic may be important. Again, if he is rushing to 60 and playing on that toon for years, then for sure just focus on an instant 60 server to get a feel.

I've been trying a few classes out and I like to at least get through most of STV and Scarlet Monastery. So ~38.

Depends on the person. Some will max level it and switch to other one anyways.

I have around 7 friends who play WoW and only 2 of them stick to their class. Everyone else changes it every other month.

If we ignore instant private servers* I would say level ~20. By that time you may still miss a good number of core abilities, but you have seen what the class offers and how it feels. If youre not feeling a class by level 20, chances are you never will.

*I dont think instant private servers are a good way of getting a feeling for a class. You would be completely overwhelmed by the amount of abilities and talent/gear choices.

I think a good plan is to get to 35 - then, even if you don't like the class, you can turn them into a profession alt who makes your eventual main the things they need. That's my plan, at least.

Stfuppercut is right. I had the opportunity to play in friend's and guildie's accounts back in Vanilla so I got a chance to experience just about every class and spec at 60 with proper gear. Nowadays, the instant 60 private servers can fill that void. You will have a general idea about class mechanics in the 20s and 30s to help make a decision, but there's really no replacement for trying out a class at 60.

60

I prefer looking at the classes, deciding which playstyle suits me most and then which class design I like more than the other.

For me is between 20-30. I mean, the iconic moves usually are learnt even at 40, but you already have a good idea of the gameplay

Is your primary focus going to be PVE (raid progression, etc.) or PVP... if PVP, what type? Battlegrounds or world?

All classes aren't created equal when it comes to their viability in PVP and how that scales whilst leveling, thus certain classes are much less forgiving pre-level 60. I think it also depends if you intend to play solo vs. with a friend or group.

I'm not being intentionally vague/evasive here but I think the answers to the questions above have a huge impact on the question you're asking.

Cheers
