Depends on the food. Australia is known for having excellent meat (steak/pork chops etc) and its one of our major exports. I think they are just not used to the different food along with different expectations. For example if you order a steak in Australia you are likely to get a T-Bone or Porter house. In Europe if you order a steak you are likely to get a Filet mignon. The mignon is usually described as superior cut, how ever it is tiny and will take an Australian by surprise.
I have found the availability of fresh foods more affordable and readily available though, but that might just be because I live in a more country area.
In short I think the food here is fine, its just Australians are not used to different things and American dishes are more similar to our own. I have not found it difficult to find the things I am used to at home, it just takes more effort and its not considered the norm here.
The biggest difference in this aspect I can think of is take away coffee on the go. Its rare I will find a good coffee place, the only place I have found similar to coffee in Australia was star bucks, but thats all over milky and sugary, along with burnt coffee that is over all awful. Anything beats take away coffee from UAE though, I swear it was just dirt in warm water

When traveling in Europe, South America, Japan, and well... most places, the average coffee standard in Australia is much higher than overseas. This is a very real and recognised 'problem' though. It is well documented that the typical quality of takeaway coffee in Australia is better than most.
