I'm hoping you can help me out! I usually have some extra time over at work, which would be perfect to login and play a bit.
However, it's a secure computer so I'm not able to install anything on it. I was thinking of installing wow on a USB stick and play from there.
Do you think that could be possible, and would I be able to run it, even though on a secure computer?
It should work. You can make WoW 'portable', although it could be a bit of a hassle with updates.
Whether or you will be able to bypass security, I don't know. Only one way to find out, I guess.
A nice fast usb drive will probably be fine, gotta hope the necessary ports aren't blocked on your network though. A lot of business network software/ hardware have built in filters to block gaming ports.
It would probably be safer and less hassle if you brought with you your own laptop
The big downside to portable installs is not the plugging in or size of the game, thats a problem of the past, but the data transfer rate. Playing on the USB stick can cause a slurry of problems because of the abysmal read speed most USBs operate on. Your login times will be slowed down and every time you enter a new zone you will probably lag to the insane. You will also kill the USB eventually.
If you choose USB you must use a 3.0/3.1 enabled one. A better alternative is to buy a cheap low capacity SSD and use that. Its small and will last almost forever. It would be a <50$ investment but have other uses.
Depending on the ports available to you I've actually been playing WoW and other games using a USB-C SSD and its super fast. I don't event notice the difference in load times compared to my laptop's internal SSD.
Would they let you use a laptop? You wouldn't be tampering with any of the 'secure' computers in that case.

To my workplace, it's a 2tb hard drive, it's really fast, not as an SSD of course, but hey, it's just for Classic. I used to play Path of Exile there.

Well, I could bring a laptop but I'm afraid it would be too suspicious.
I do have some extra time here and there, but I don't think they would approve of me playing WoW.
If they found out, they would probably just give more tasks!
Sounds like you shouldn't risk your job just to play more WoW.
May be better off just getting a GPD device capable of running it instead of compromising or circumventing your Employer's system security implementations.
You may also be able to just use Chrome Remote Desktop to home, or some other streaming solution that's permissible.

Happy to help you out. You'll need a few things tho, but this will do EXACTLY what you want :) It depends entirely on you having a Nvidia graphics card so if you have an ATI, sorry. This wont work.
Pending you have the Nvidia card, here's what else you'll need.
Go get a Tablet that can be ROOTED. so Android. Root it, put supersu on there. I personally use a Lenovo P8, screens a bit small but it was cheap as chips and could be rooted with relative ease.
Now go download "Moonlight Games Stream for rooted devices" and install it.
Open the Nvidia Geforce experience app on your pc, turn on games stream, pair the tablet with nvidia (inside moonlight app)
Follow the instructions on the Moonlight Games Stream website and setup port forwarding on your modem / router so your tablet can find a connection to your PC.
Either add wow as a game by itself (nvidia will detect it) or add "mtsc.exe" as an app if you'd like to remote in to see your desktop instead of straight into a game.
Last on your list is a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, the one i found that did not require a dongle was the "microsoft designer bluetooth desktop combo" Pair them both to the tablet.
Now connect to your PC, launch an app or desktop. Off you go. You're literally playing on your PC but through a tablet.
This is the same technology that the next gen consoles will be using, however instead of your PC it will be a server in a data centre.

Edit - to clarify you can still use it with a non rooted device however it will be a serious pain in your ass. without the root it cant line up the bluetooth mouse with your pc's mouse, they dont scale properly so they will jump out of sync constantly, you'll need to tap the tablet screen to re-centre the tablets mouse to the one on your pc, but it'll still go out of sync instantly. The root removes the tablets mouse and forces it to use the one displaying on your pc, so there's no double mouse or shit not lining up.
I play from work, but I bust out this 10" windows 10 tablet that i have. Its loaded up on a sd card and I just tether my mobile to it, works like a charm and its easy to carry around. The tablet itself is nothing fancy, 4gb basic Chinese brand but it runs it fine and only cost $100.
Easiest way to do it is to befriend the IT guys to install the game. Odds are 1 or 2 are probably gonna play WoW as well. That said, Cur's solution seems very interesting. Might try it out myself, just for giggles.

Be careful with cloud gaming services. EDIT: I did some digging and was unable to find documented cases of anyone being banned for using moonlight or an official blizz post commenting on streaming from your own PC. The article in the link refers to gaming cloud services where your instance of wow would run in a datacenter, which is now against the EULA. Does anyone happen to know blizzards stance on this? Could be the cleanest solution to the OPs problem.
