Blackwing Lair Loot Guide – Season of Discovery (SoD)
Blackwing Lair was the second raid in Vanilla World of Warcraft, and Phase 5 of Season of Discovery has brought it back with some new and revamped loot for players to acquire. Tier 2 sets have been overhauled, with new versions for every class and role. Players who prefer their Tier 1 set bonuses are now able to obtain a special alternate Tier 2 set that keeps those bonuses.
Tier 2 Sets
As with Tier 1, the original Tier 2 raid gear in Vanilla WoW offered only one set for each class. In Season of Discovery, each build has its own set with unique stats and set bonuses as well as a recolored appearance to distinguish it visually from its siblings.
Tier pieces can be obtained by turning in the appropriate token. Each slot has its own token, and the following classes share token types:
- Draconian: Priest, Mage, Warlock
- Primeval: Warrior, Rogue, Druid
- Ancient: Paladin, Hunter, Shaman
Most of the tokens drop from specific bosses in Blackwing Lair. Bracer tokens are purchased with 125 Tarnished Undermine Real. Belt tokens drop from Prince Thunderaan in The Crystal Vale. Head and Legs tokens that previously dropped from Onyxia and Ragnaros now drop inside Blackwing Lair as well.
In addition, there are Draconic and Core Forged versions of every Tier 2 piece. Draconic is the designation for the standard Tier 2 pieces, while Core Forged versions offer identical stats with Tier 1 set bonuses. So if you’d prefer to keep your old set bonuses, you will have the opportunity to upgrade to Tier 2 this phase without having to give those up. Draconic versions are purchased with tokens from Victor Nefriendius at the entrance of Blackwing Lair while Core Forged versions can be traded from the Hydraxians just inside the Molten Core.
Shadowflame Weapons
Many of the weapons that drop in BWL have Shadowflame variations in Season of Discovery. For these weapons to drop, you must have at least three dragonflight trials active in the raid, with one of them being Black Essence.

Epic Class Trinkets
The class-specific trinkets that drop in BWL have had their effects reworked and their cooldowns reduced. In most cases, the cooldowns were reduced from 5 minutes to 2.
Note that Rune of Metamorphosis has had its name changed to Shapeshifter’s Sigil.

Epic Class Quests
There is a new epic quest for every class in Phase 5 of Season of Discovery, similar to the Vanilla quest chains for Benediction/Anathema and Rhok’delar, Long bow of the Ancient Keepers. These quests start with an item that drops from a specific boss in BWL and reward a powerful epic weapon, shield, or trinket.
