PvE Marksmanship Hunter Best Professions – WoW Classic

Nevermore Nevermore • Updated June 7, 2025

In this part of the guide, you can find a list of the best professions that Marksmanship Hunters can use, along with any other professions that may be useful or even some that are considered completely sub-par.

Best Professions

  • Engineering is widely regarded as the best profession in WoW Classic for almost any character, including Marksmanship Hunters! It allows players to create Bombs, Gadgets, Grenades, Ammo, and special Gear pieces that enhance their performance. Players can get their hands on Goblin Sapper ChargeDark Iron BombThorium Grenade, and Thorium Shells, among many other goodies. The only downside of Engineering is that the profession is extremely hard to level up and maintain, requiring a large amount of materials that can drain your gold instantly if not paired with Mining or a very good gold-generation profession.
  • Mining is a great profession if you choose to pair it with Engineering, not only for the leveling process but for the creation of any bomb or grenade consumable after reaching 300. Without Mining, it is extremely hard to keep up with creating Engineering items without a very hefty amount of gold.
  • Leatherworking is a great profession that can land you some awesome gear pieces, throughout your journey as a Marksmanship Hunter. Similar to other crafting professions, Leatherworking can become expensive to level up or create high-end items without pairing it with Skinning.
  • Skinning is a great profession for Marksmanship Hunters who pick up Leatherworking. The profession allows players to skin beasts and gather their hides, creating Leather. The profession is great at gold generation as well, but it is mainly used to funnel Leatherworking when compared to Alchemy/Herbalism.

Useful Professions

  • Alchemy is one of the best professions for gold generation and overall resources during any PvE encounter. When paired with Herbalism, having Alchemy will make sure that you won’t lack any elixir, potion, or flask that you may require during combat. Sadly, besides gold generation and a supply of potions and elixirs, Alchemy loses to Engineering in terms of raw performance since Engineering is simply way better overall.
  • Herbalism is an extremely good gold generation tool for any player as it allows them to gather herbs from across the world which can be sold or used with Alchemy. Since potions, flasks, and elixirs are always in high demand, Herbalism will always generate one of the highest gold returns in the game.

Sub-Par Professions

  • Blacksmithing is a sub-optimal profession for Marksmanship Hunters, providing only a few items of real value. The only valuable items are the keys that can unlock lockboxes, rods for enchanters to use, and a very few Mail craftable items. Hunters can only use Mail armor after level 40, the profession can be useful only in the later parts of the game, which are easily replaceable by Dungeons or Raids.
  • Enchanting is sub-optimal for any Marksmanship Hunters besides its role in gold generation. Since enchants can be bought from someone else, the profession doesn’t grant any specific PvE use that couldn’t easily be acquired from another source.
  • Tailoring is yet another sub-par profession for Marksmanship Hunters since the profession is mainly used to create Cloth items that they don’t require. The only good part about this profession is the creation of bags and BoEs, effectively being just yet another gold-generation tool.

PvE Marksmanship Hunter Best Professions

Nevermore Nevermore • Updated June 7, 2025

Professions are a crucial part of your World of Warcraft character, potentially offering a large boost to your damage, healing or survivability, while also allowing you to generate some gold.

This section will cover some of your best options for professions as a Marksmanship Hunter.

Best Professions

Like with most other classes & specs in the game, Engineering will be your strongest profession. For the second profession slot, we recommend Jewelcrafting, though Blacksmithing is extremely close to it in performance.

Engineering is the king of professions for PvE content, offering a vast, vast array of different benefits.

The main benefit of Engineering lies in the Hyperspeed Accelerators gloves enchant, which gives +340 haste rating for 12 seconds, on a 1 minute cooldown. This translates into a ~10% attack speed increase with a 20% uptime, which is already amazing on its own — but it becomes even bigger when you use the Accelerators when your various trinkets proc.

Additionally, as an Engineer you have access to the Nitro Boosts boots enchant, passively giving +24 crit rating and coming with an-use effect which massively increases your speed for 5 seconds, allowing you to move out of dangerous AoE effects quickly.

Finally, just like in previous expansions, Engineers can use powerful explosives such as Saronite Bombs and Global Thermal Sapper Charges.

No surprises there, Jewelcrafting is an extremely potent profession for most classes / specs and that includes Marksmanship Hunters. Not only do you gain access to powerful, Jewelcrafter-unique gems, but you also get to sell gems to others, giving you a modest income through this profession.

The main benefit of Jewelcrafting is the Jewelcrafter-unique gems, Dragon’s Eye, which are more powerful than regular gems, but are limited to 3 equipped at a time. The main ones you’ll be crafting as a Hunter are Delicate Dragon’s Eye and Fractured Dragon’s Eye, resulting in +42 agility or +42 armor penetration rating compared to using regular epic gems.

Useful Professions

The following professions are considered viable, but offer a lesser benefit compared to the best professions, so they’re not recommended. If you’re not focused on making your character 100% optimal, you can use any of these professions just fine.

Blacksmiths can add 2 extra gem sockets to their gear — 1 on wrists, and 1 on hands. Socketing 2x Delicate Cardinal Ruby or 2x Fractured Cardinal Ruby into them translates into a +40 agility or +40 armor penetration rating bonus.

The main benefit of Blacksmithing is the massive flexibility it brings, as you could socket anything you want into those extra 2 slots — if you’re armor penetration capped but need some more hit, you could socket Glinting Ametrine, for example. Jewelcrafting offers slightly more stats, but significantly fewer options.

As Hunters cannot use plate gear, the benefits of Blacksmithing end there, sadly. It is not particularly a great profession as far as gold generation is concerned, either.

As a Tailor, you gain access to the Swordguard Embroidery cloak enchant, a proc which gives you +400 attack power for 15 seconds with a 45 second internal cooldown. This translates into a possible +133 attack power bonus on average if it procs exactly every 45 seconds, or a +100 attack power bonus on average if it procs every 60 seconds, which is absolutely massive.

However, there is a significant opportunity cost attached to this bonus, as it prohibits you from using the standard cloak enchant, Enchant Cloak – Major Agility, making it slightly weaker in practice. Procs are extremely powerful as they can be stacked together with cooldowns, so this bonus shouldn’t be written off at all because of this — it’s just not as powerful as Jewelcrafting and Blacksmithing, with their armor penetration bonuses.

Tailoring is pretty weak on the gold generation side, unfortunately, so the cloak enchant is all you really get here.

As a Scribe, you gain access to the Master’s Inscription of the Axe shoulder enchant, which provides a +80 attack power increase over the standard enchant available to everyone, Greater Inscription of the Axe. This bonus ties Enchanting and Leatherworking, and rivals the +40 agility bonus that Blacksmithing offers, though Blacksmithing still offers superior flexibility.

Scribes also get to make Glyphs & scrolls, providing a nice source of income, but many will argue that the real benefit in Inscription comes in not having to grind The Sons of Hodir reputation for the shoulder enchants!

As an Enchanter you gain access to the Enchant Ring – Assault enchant, which you can apply to both of your rings for a modest +80 attack power. This bonus ties Inscription and Leatherworking, and rivals the +40 agility bonus that Blacksmithing offers, though Blacksmithing still offers superior flexibility.

You also get to enchant your own equipment without needing to tip another enchanter, which results in a neat amount of gold saved, on top of the gold you can generate by enchanting others.

As a Leatherworker you gain access to the Fur Lining – Attack Power bracer enchant, which proves a +80 attack power increase over the standard enchant available to everyone, Enchant Bracers – Greater Assault. This bonus ties Inscription and Enchanting, and rivals the +40 agility bonus that Blacksmithing offers, though Blacksmithing still offers superior flexibility.

As a Leatherworker, you can make some handy mail gear for yourself, which gives this profession a little extra value over some of the technically stronger professions mentioned above, such as Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting. However, you replace all of your crafted gear for raid gear in WotLK, meaning this benefit is very short-lived, and given that Leatherworking isn’t great on the generation side either, it’s overall not an amazing profession.

As an Alchemist, you gain access to the Mixology passive effect, which increases the effectiveness of flasks and elixirs you consume, but only if you can craft them yourself. This results in a +64 attack power increase when using Flask of Endless Rage, our preferred flask. This is sadly a smaller boost than what other professions can offer, but not by much.

On the flipside, Alchemy is one of the best professions for gold generation, as potions, flasks and elixirs are always relevant and in high demand. This makes it a great profession for your alts to have.

Skinners gain access to the Master of Anatomy passive, which offers a +40 crit rating boost. This is weaker than all of the other professions mentioned in this list, but at least it’s something.

Skinning is generally not that good at gold generation either, so it’s overall not a great profession.

Sub-Par Professions

The following professions do not offer any DPS-increasing benefits and are thus not considered viable for Marksmanship Hunters in PvE.

Herbalists gain the Lifeblood active skill, which heals you for 3600 over 5 seconds, with a 3 minute cooldown. This can occasionally come in handy, particularly while leveling, farming or questing, but will generally never be enough to save you in a dungeon or raid.

On the flipside, Herbalism is one of the strongest professions for gold generation, as herbs are used in Alchemy and Inscription, and thus always in demand. Hunters are particularly good when it comes to gathering professions, so if this Hunter is just an alt that you don’t play to raid with very often, you could pick Herbalism — but you should know that your DPS will take a big hit.

Miners gain access to the Toughness passive, which offers a +60 stamina boost. This is alright for tanks, but generally won’t cut it for a Marksmanship Hunter.

Just like with Herbalism, Mining is a great profession for gold generation, and Hunters are particularly good when it comes to gathering professions. So if this Hunter is just an alt that you don’t play to raid with very often, you could pick Mining — but you should know that your DPS will take a big hit.

Not mentioning that you can craft bis ammo and the parachute enchantment for the cloak from engineering is a serious omission.
