How to Get to the Shadowlands
The Shadowlands expansion added a new realm to the game: the plane of death, where mortal souls go when they die. It’s a very different place than Azeroth or the other worlds you can visit in the game. To get there, you’ll need to complete a few quests. We’ll start there. If you’ve already been to the Shadowlands, you can skip to the “Portals to the Shadowlands” section to find out how to get back.
Starting the Shadowlands Story
The first step is to start the Shadowlands storyline. If you haven’t reached level 50 on any character yet, you may need to complete the Dragonflight introduction before these quests become available. We have a separate guide for that here. Once you have completed the introduction, you should be able to start the Shadowlands expansion. Your character must be at least level 10 to start these quests.
This introductory quest chain starts in your faction’s capital city.
Alliance
There are two options to start the Shadowlands introductory quests:
Option 1: Chromie Time
Find Chromie near the Stormwind Embassy. Speak with her to select a timeline. Select “The Realms of Death” to start the quest Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons. You must be below level 60 to access Chromie Time.
Option 2: Highlord Darion Mograine
You can also opt to head straight to Highlord Darion Mograine and start the quests from there. You will find him on the stairs leading up to Stormwind Keep. He offers the quest Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons. Note that you may not be able to see him if you are in a different Chromie timeline.
Horde
There are two options to start the Shadowlands introductory quests:
Option 1: Chromie Time
Find Chromie near the Orgrimmar Embassy. Speak with her to select a timeline. Select “The Realms of Death” to start the quest Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons. You must be below level 60 to access Chromie Time.
Option 2: Highlord Darion Mograine
You can also opt to head straight to Highlord Darion Mograine and start the quests from there. You will find him in front of Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar. He offers the quest Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons. Note that you may not be able to see him if you are in a different Chromie timeline.
How to Get to Oribos
Although you only need to do a couple of quests to get to the Shadowlands, you will need to do a lot more if you want to unlock the portal in Oribos and explore beyond The Maw. If you’ve done these quests before on any character, you should be able to skip The Maw introduction and head straight to Oribos. Here are all of the quests required to unlock the portals in Oribos:
The Frozen Throne

- If you’ve done these quests before on any character, you can skip ahead to Oribos by talking to High Inquisitor Whitemane (Alliance) or General Nazgrim (Horde). This will jump you to the quest Stranger in an Even Stranger Land in Oribos.

The Maw
- ! A Fractured Blade + ! Mawsworn Menace
- ! Ruiner’s End
- ! Fear to Tread

- You have a second opportunity here to skip ahead to Oribos if you’ve done these quests before. Just talk to Lady Jaina Proudmoore.

Oribos
Portals to the Shadowlands
The only ways to get to the Shadowlands beyond the introductory quests are through portals.
Mage Portals
Mages can create a portal for their party members with Portal: Oribos.
For personal use, they also have Teleport: Oribos.
Stormwind Portal (Alliance)
There is a portal to Oribos in the Stormwind Portal Room.
Orgrimmar Portal (Horde)
There is a portal to Oribos in the Orgrimmar Portal Room.
